Let’s Talk with Maggie Toussaint

Energy Vamps
By Maggie Toussaint

There’s a new critter in my latest Dreamwalker Mystery, Dadgummit. I stumbled upon the idea of an energy vampire in the oddest way, through a conversation with a friend. Somehow our chat drifted to the topic of people who are exhausting. Some people exhaust me because they seem to be running at 100 mph to my slow and steady 10 mph, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

The people I find draining are ones that leave you feeling empty and exhausted. There’s just something about being in their presence that when they leave, you crave a pick-me-up or a power nap.

My friend suggested they might be energy vampires, that is, their body somehow steals energy from ours when they are in close proximity. I searched online and lo and behold there were oodles of posts. People had been talking about this for some time, as it turned out.

While I was interested in real energy vamps, my mystery-writing mind starting asking a what-if question. What if someone with this ability could drain you of every drop of energy? What if this person could kill without a trace?

That was the launch moment for Dadgummit. The book just released on Aug 1 – more details about that at my website.

Dru Ann Love at Dru’s Book Musings said this about Dadgummit: “Boasting a wonderful cast of characters, engaging dialogue and a supernatural atmosphere, this is one of the best books in the terrific series and I look forward to more adventures with Baxley and her friends.”

For a chance to win the digital format of Gone and Done It, book one of this series, share about a person who made you feel exhausted. And it’s probably a good idea to change names or the person’s occupation in your retelling so they don’t seek you out!
