It’s National Office Chocolate Day!
October 20 might have just been elevated to being one of my favorite holidays. That’s because it’s National Office Chocolate Day!
That’s right. Chocolate has its own day (actually, it has at least three because there’s also World Chocolate Day on July 7 and International Chocolate Day on September 13. Whew! That’s a lot of holidays over one little confection. Then again, we’re talking chocolate here. Need I say more?
Chocolate history
Good old chocolate has been around for a long time—about 2,000 years, actually. Kudos to anyone who knows who the Olmec were. They were the first Mesoamerican culture (think, Central Mexico down into Belize, Northern Costa Rica, and a whole lot more). They had a rich religion, were talented artists and architects, and invented some cool stuff—like chocolate. The Mayans and the Aztecs also got into the act and figured out how to make unsweetened beverages using the dark stuff.
And today
Far be it from me to espouse chocolate as a health food, so I’ll let WebMD handle that! They say that dark chocolate has compounds that “help protect your cells from inflammation, improve your brain function, and boost your immune and cardiovascular health.” Sign me up! My new, go-to health food!
The point of National Office Chocolate Day is to share chocolate with your coworkers. But what if you work from home like me? Well, I have an office. I work (some would beg to differ with me). But I’m going with that and think I’ll help myself to some dark chocolate to celebrate the day!
Are you going to celebrate? Do you have coworkers to share with? What about a chocolate office party? Leave a comment to let me know your thoughts. I will select one commenter to win a copy of one of my books, and that includes The Case of the Amorous Assailant.

Hi Terry, this would be my new favorite holiday if I still worked in a traditional office. It does remind me of my full-paying job where we had an annual Engineering Christmas Cookie Day. Yes, you should have seen how creative the offerings were. You could smell the sugar as you entered the back door — engineering was on the second floor. We all suffered from a sugar coma in the afternoons, but the free coffee helped. I’ll have a chocolate bar in honor of this fabulous holiday.
How much fun! A Christmas Cookie Day! What a great day to enjoy. Have some chocolate to celebrate this one!
Wow everyday is this for me at the office!!!!! Who knew it was a day!!!
In honor of the day, I ate one of the Bailey’s chocolates my son brought back for me on his family’s recent trip to Ireland. But I made sure it was one of the dark chocolate varieties so I could claim it was a healthy snack. 😉
A coworker keeps a bowl of Hershey Kisses at her desk – we take turns refilling it.
I bought a bag of Halloween candy last week for the little jack o’ lantern/black cat basket I pull out this time of year. Everything is chocolate of some sort. so looks like I’m celebrating by happenstance (even if I am home sick today).
