Characters on the Bench

If my author didn’t tell me what to do, I’d _______.
- Terry Ambrose:
Alexandra Atwood: I’d totally hang out with my friends and do fun stuff. The truth is, I kinda wonder why an old guy keeps messing around in the life of a teen like me and my parents. Come on, get a life of your own, Mr. Author Person!
- Nancy J. Cohen:
Marla Vail: If my author didn’t tell me what to do, I’d …find it a lot easier to get on with my life. She keeps involving me in all these shenanigans when I just want to live in peace and enjoy my family. Then again, I like to be challenged so maybe it’s a good thing that she keeps throwing obstacles in my path. Otherwise, life would be boring, right?
- Debra H. Goldstein:
Sarah Blair; If my author didn’t tell me what to do, I’d probably get into less messes, but I’d miss out on meeting people and getting involved with the animal rescue world. I can’t imagine my life without RahRah or Fluffy, but if my author hadn’t pushed me, I would never have had one let alone two pets.
- Cheryl Hollon:
Savannah Webb here from the Webb’s Glass Shop Mysteries:
If my author didn’t keep such a close watch on me, I’d love to explore a new artistic pursuit like oil painting or even film photography with an antique large-format camera. There’s something timeless about capturing light and color in unexpected ways.
- Maggie Toussaint:
Bob Mancini of “Mancini Blue: I’ve had enough of people telling me what to do. After my wife passed, my grown sons tried bossing me around. I couldn’t believe it when no one thought my wife was murdered. They thought it was a natural death. So I drank too much, did stupid stuff, and got arrested. It landed me in a psych ward. Now that I’m out, I’m happy with my author letting me choose the direction my story goes.
- Lois Winston:
Anastasia Pollack: If my author didn’t tell me what to do, I’d consider it a miracle. The woman gets her kicks out of throwing dead bodies at my feet and placing me in deadly situations. The least she could have done was make me an FBI agent or fully trained detective instead of an amateur sleuth with only my brains and problem-solving skills to help me.
That's it for our characters. They've obviously got their own ideas about how much—or how little—their authors should be doing in their lives. Our characters would love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment!
The characters have legitimate complaints.
This is so interesting! Maybe author persons would love the chance to talk with their characters about writing process – a true win-win.
