What symbolizes Autumn to you beyond the simple turning of the leaves?
  • Terry Ambrose:

Rick Atwood, owner of the Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast here. Fall is when we start gearing up for our amazing holiday season at the B&B. But it’s also the time that I think back to my first kiss with my wife. It happened during Christmas in the attic when we were both a little tipsy. But, you know what? That kiss has made me love fall and decorating for the holidays! And, of course, there’s always Marquetta’s baking. If my wife’s cookies can’t fatten our guests up, nothing can!

  • Nancy J. Cohen:

Marla Vail says, Here in South Florida, the humidity lessens, and the days get cooler. It’s jacket weather, and while the leaves don’t fall or change color, we have seasonal flowers that bloom in different months. Of course, the stores all start stocking for the fall holidays.

  • Debra H. Goldstein:

Sarah Blair says, Lately, it has been finding dead bodies. But, in general, when I think of Autumn, I think about sweaters, jackets, football, and hot cider. Of course, because I don’t cook, my twin, gourmet chef, Emily, has to make the hot cider.

  • Cheryl Hollon:

Miranda Trent here. In my part of Eastern Kentucky, the turning of the leaves draws tourists from far and wide to view the fall colors. However, my favorite part is watching the harvested sugar cane being turned into molasses on an old-timey mule-driven press. This is followed by cooking down the syrup in a wood-fired cooker. The smell is divine.

  • Diane A.S. Stuckart:

Nina Fleet of the Georgia B&B Mysteries says, Autumn means pulling out a whole new wardrobe. While I’m more a fan of Summer, I do enjoy “sweater weather” when there’s a crisp in the air and folks start breaking out the hot chocolate along with fleece and woolies. Oh, and can’t forget football season!

  • Maggie Toussaint:

Tabby Winslow, amateur sleuth of TALLOWED GROUND, A Magic Candle Shop Mystery, says:  I love the entire sensory experience of autumn. For one, the woods smell different, with rich aromas of nuts and leaves. Where I grew up in GA, most of the leaves stayed on the trees for the winter. So I never experienced falling leaves. But the vines change color here and so do the hickories. I enjoy collecting pinecones from our longleaf pines. Also we get migratory bids that pass through here in fall. Such a fun sight to see!

  • Lois Winston

Anastasia Pollack says, I love when New Jersey turns from hazy, hot, and humid to brisk sweater weather days. It’s my favorite time to go down the shore and walk on the beach with Zack. So far, we haven’t stumbled across any dead bodies on the sand. I’m hoping that continues, but given my life? What are the odds my luck will hold out?

Can't you almost hear our characters singing, "These are a few of my favorite things?" Why not join in with some of your own? We'd love to have you tell us your favorites in the comments.

  1. this is such a fun way to hear from everyone. I love fall because of lower temps and canning. especially apple sauce and apple chips and apple butter for the winter.

  2. Always the changing colors on the leaves, cooler weather, sitting by the campfire eating S’mores and hotdogs. Fall is my favorite season!

  3. I live in Southern California, so Autumn to me is when we turn the clocks back an hour. It’s a kickoff to the holiday season!
