Let's Talk with Terry Ambrose

Picture this: Las Vegas. June. My husband and I are checking into our hotel, already sweating in places we didn’t know could sweat. The desk clerk greets us with a straight face: “Welcome to Las Vegas, where it’s so hot even the dogs wear shoes.”

We laughed. Oh, how we laughed. What a ridiculous image!

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I was walking into a supermarket in Palm Desert. A couple leaving the store passed me, their dog between them. (I’ll hold back on the whole dogs-in-supermarket thing.) Glancing down, I nearly broke out laughing—the dog was wearing what can only be described as mini-Crocs.

Not just wearing them. Rocking them.

This wasn’t some embarrassed pooch shuffling along in shame. Oh no. This little diva was strutting across that scorching asphalt like it was the Milan runway. Confident. Stylish. Completely unbothered. Meanwhile, I’m out here in my regular human shoes like some kind of peasant. This little guy was cool enough to give me a shoe-shame complex.

When I wrote my latest Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast Mystery, Death by Blueprint, I introduced Shadow—a Newfoundland who tips the scales at well over 100 pounds. Think “small horse” and you’re getting warm.

Dog shoes? Didn’t even cross my mind. Though if Shadow ever needed them, we’d be talking about canine size 13s. Probably custom-made. Definitely expensive.

Shadow is a key part of the story. He’s a constant needle in Rick’s side. Let’s get real. This is definitely a case where “size matters.” But Shadow is Alex’s inspiration, her crime-solving sidekick, and even her protector when trouble strikes. He proves that sometimes, the best partners have four legs.
