Today’s my Lucky Day

October 13, 2022

Today’s my lucky day! It’s October 13th.

I’m one of those folks who adore the number 13. Not everyone is a fan, and some cultures are extremely adverse to anything associated with it. For me, it was the day I became a mother. It was also the day of my first international trip to the UK, and I’ve traveled extensively since then.

I recently read that Queen Elizabeth II attended banquets of twelve guests or fourteen guests, but never thirteen. On our last cruise ship, there was no Deck 13. The elevator buttons would take you to either Deck 12 or 14. I try to stay in a cabin on Deck 14 because I know it is actually Deck 13. I always check in high-rise hotels to see what they have chosen.

Today also happens to be Ada Lovelace Day. I’m a big fan of her contribution to computer programming. In her notes on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, she proposed a general-purpose computer. The U.S. Department of Defense named its high-level computer language after her. It was used on my first flight simulator project, and I used it for most of my engineering career.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month, with today, October 13, specifically set aside to observe Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness day. Everyone can do something, big or small, to get involved.

It’s important to reach out and encourage your women friends and family to get a mammogram. Do it now. It could save their lives.

I’m celebrating my lucky day today. What’s your lucky number?

My Paint & Shine Mysteries are set in the Daniel Boone National Forest. My parents were born, raised, and now rest in peace at the Adams Family Cemetery in Wolfe County, Kentucky. The characters spend a lot of time preparing traditional southern meals and creating moonshine cocktails. Please consider buying locally. Independent bookstores need your help during this challenging time.

While you’re here, enter our Booklover’s Bench contest. We’re collecting entries for a book giveaway from our vault by all the Booklover’s Bench authors. It runs from October 1-18. Click here to enter!

  1. I’ve always been a fan of 13, and if I have an option I would chose it over other numbers for rooms, buses, raffle tickets, etc.. Not necessarily as a lucky number but, to quote Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice, mostly because “I myself am strange and unusual.” 🙂 Great link to Ada — I knew of her but little about her, and it was an interesting read.

  2. My lucky number is 7, but I like all numbers as long as I don’t need to do addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division!
