Characters on the Bench

If you could have been a character in another book or series, who would you have liked to be?
  • Terry Ambrose:

Jade Cavendish of the Beachtown Detective Agency Mystery series said, “I’d want to be Kinsey Millhone in Sue Grafton’s Alphabet Mysteries. Santa Teresa sounds like such an amazing place. I love Carlsbad, but it would be nice to live someplace where the freeway isn’t always jammed up!”

  • Nancy J. Cohen:

Marla Vail from the Bad Hair Day Mysteries says: I wouldn’t be chasing down killers, for sure. If I could be any character, I’d choose Sarina Bretton, the heroine in my author’s paranormal romance, Circle of Light. Then I’d use my legendary healing powers to go back in time and undo a tragedy from my past. Or, if that wasn’t possible, at least I could help people in this timeline.

  • Debra H. Goldstein:

Sarah Blair: Cherry Ames. Her studies and jobs as a nurse didn’t interest me as much as her spunk and ability to deal with people and solve mysteries.

  • Cheryl Hollon:

Hi there! Miranda Trent here, owner of the Paint & Shine cultural tourism business nestled in the gorgeous mountains of Eastern Kentucky. If I could step into the pages of another book, I’d happily don a bonnet and become one of the marriageable ladies in a Jane Austen novel. The elegant dresses, the witty banter, the social intrigue—yes, please! I find all that charming manipulation and strict etiquette endlessly fascinating. Plus, who wouldn’t want to trade moonshine for a dance at the Netherfield Ball (at least for an evening)?

  • Maggie Toussaint:

Tabby Winslow, amateur sleuth of the A Magic Candle Shop Mystery series, would love to have been Sookie Stackhouse’s cousin in the Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series. Sookie’s story world included the entire realm of paranormals and Tabby would love to learn more about fairies firsthand.

  • Lois Winston

Anastasia Pollack, reluctant amateur sleuth of the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries: Well, it certainly wouldn’t be a character who’s constantly stumbling over dead bodies! I’ve often wished Lois had stuck with writing romance or chick lit and written me into one of those books. If I had to pick one, it would be Nori Stedworth from Talk Gertie to Me. That girl’s got moxie!

What about you? If you could step into the pages of any book and become a character, who would you choose to be—and why? Would you solve mysteries, wield magic, or dance at a Regency ball? Let us know in the comments!

  1. It seems all time periods have there problems. Regency restrictions on women, no rights and 1960’s lots of political action. so maybe the 70’s when things where calmer and not as much weather problems with floods and fires. Deborah

  2. Love reading your answers and love the questions!!! I would love to be a character out of an Antique Store and figure out mysteries that appear from items people bring in.

We love to hear from you! Leave a Reply
