On The Bench

Congratulations! You’ve Won the Lottery! Now What?

Your author has you win the lottery. What’s the first thing you’ll buy?
  • Terry Ambrose:

Alexandra Atwood from the Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast Mystery series says, “I’d buy Scoops n’Scones! If I owned Seaside Cove’s ice cream store, I could have all the flavors that I love whenever I wanted! That would be awesome!”

  • Nancy J. Cohen:

Marla says, “A bigger house! We have a 4/3 single-story house but with two kids, that’s going to feel cramped, especially when Brianna comes home for the holidays. Dalton could use a home office, and a separate playroom would be nice, but we’ll have to manage with what we have now. I never imagined our family would grow this way.”

  • Debra H. Goldstein:

RahRah the Siamese cat – “Well, I already own a house and have all the toys I could want, so maybe a new scratching post?”

  • Cheryl Hollon:

Miranda Trent of the Paint & Shine Series here. Well, bless her heart if she did! First thing I’d do is pay off the back taxes on the farm so I could breathe a little easier. Then I’d pour what’s left into turning that old tobacco barn into a state-of-the-art moonshine distillery, complete with indoor plumbing and actual insulation. After all that, maybe I’d splurge on a real pair of hiking boots that don’t leave me with blisters after three hours on the trail.

  • Diane A.S. Stuckart:

Nina Fleet from The Georgia B&B mysteries says, “My author already gave me a nice settlement in my divorce, so I’m doing well as long as I don’t go crazy spending cash. If I had lottery money, I’d indulge myself with a Louis Vuitton bag and then set aside an amount to donate to local small charities over the year.”

  • Maggie Toussaint:

Tabby Quigsly of A Magic Candle Shop Mystery series would never play the lottery, so this absolutely wouldn’t happen. For the sake of being a team player, Tabby says the things she wants are things money can’t buy. So if she won the lottery, she’d find the right places to give it away.

  • Lois Winston:

Anastasia Pollack, the reluctant amateur sleuth of my Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries, had to count pennies—literally!—ever since her husband permanently cashed in his chips in Las Vegas and left her with debt that rivaled the GNP of a Third World nation. No spoilers, but now that she’s in Book 14 of the series, life has gotten better. However, she could certainly use a new car, and I think that would be her first purchase.

That's it for our characters. As you can see, there's a wide range in what they'd do. From frivilous to philanthropic, their lottery winnings would go to any number of things. What would you do if that happened to you? We'd love to hear, so leave a comment below.

  1. I would move back to my home town to be near family. I would then create a family trust, donate to the volunteer fire dept, library, and animal shelter. Once all that was done, I would do some traveling. I would love to be able to take my cousins to Ireland.

  2. Oh, if only I was so lucky!!! If I won the lottery, I will travel around yhe world..I don’t know how long I would travel but definitely not on 80 days!
Then I’ll donate some to like animal shelters, kids hospital etc..
And maybe buy a house near the beach…

  3. I would have a pool put in the yard and take a European vacation. I would also give some money to all of the local charities.

  4. I would give to different charities and animal shelters. Help my relatives even the ones I do not like and some special friends. A good home for me and my pets that I could afford without Social Security. I sure would try to spend most of it before I am gone.
