What’s the best movie you’ve seen so far this year?
  • Terry Ambrose:

Kudos to my fellow Benchers who actually get out and watch a movie, but I haven’t been to a theater in…welll, I don’t exactly know how long. Too loud. Too violent. Did I mention too loud? But that doesn’t mean I don’t like movies, I do. One of my favs for this year is Villa Amore, which starred Eloise Mumford and Kevin McGarry. It was shot on location in Italy and tells the story of an American woman who impulsively buys a villa in Italy. Kind of a takeoff on Under the Tuscan Sun, but done Hallmark style.

  • Nancy J. Cohen:

I’ve only been watching movies at home. The latest one I saw that made me laugh out loud was The Out-Laws on Netflix. It’s like Meet the Parents but with a criminal twist.

  • Debra H. Goldstein:

I’m deprived. I haven’t seen any movies of late.

  • Cheryl Hollon:

Hands down—WICKED! I’ve always been a sucker for a good origin story, and this one hit all the right notes (literally and emotionally). The music gave me chills, the visuals were absolutely stunning, and I loved how it gave depth and heart to characters we thought we already knew. As a mystery writer, I’m all about seeing the “other side” of a story. I left the theater humming and already planning to see it again.

  • Diane A.S. Stuckart:

It’s been a while since I’ve been to a movie theater so most of what I watch is on TV. This year my favorite has been an oldie but goodie, Jaws. It always pops up mid-summer, and I never get tired of watching it. I saw it at least four times this year, and I have to say that it holds up well.

  • Maggie Toussaint:

I admit my taste in movies is eclectic. The most recent movie I’ve seen is Brick, where people in a town awaken to find themselves bricked in their apartment. That one has suspense, relationships, and danger. Those are some of my favorite things! I’ve also enjoyed the romantic comedy Aloha, The Wrong Missy, and Mind of a Dog.

  • Lois Winston:

Wicked, hands down! I can’t wait for Part Two. I saw the show on Broadway twice with Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith and never thought anyone else could do justice to the roles of Elphaba and Glinda. I was so wrong. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were both magnificent! They made the roles their own while at the same time playing homage to the original stars, and it was great to see them both together again in cameos.

That does it for us. While 'Wicked' wins the award for Best Movie, romantic comedies get the nod for favorite genre. What about you? What's the best movie you've seen this year?

  1. It’s worth seeing the new Superman in a movie theater on a big screen. I really enjoyed this new edition of the superhero.

  2. I have not gone to the movies for almost 14 years. I do not even watch them on TV. Most seem to be full of violence, too much action, too much killing, and too loud. Actually, now it cost too much unless you bring your own treats.

  3. Like several of you, I haven’t been to a movie theater in YEARS and I haven’t really even watched TV in MANY months; however, occasionally when a few members of my family are together, we’ll watch a movie (or game show) on TV. Like @Nancy J. Cohen, our movie choices always tend to be the Hallmark-style – either cozy mystery or rom-com 🙂
