Summertime, and the reading is easy!
I always read more in the summer than in the winter down here in Florida. This is because I’m spending more time indoors in lovely air-conditioned comfort. The reason? It’s HOT here. It’s too hot to walk downtown in the noon-day sun. In fact, we call it the 90/90 season. That’s a temperature above 90 degrees and more than 90 percent humidity. I do spend a bit of time around the pool – after all my writing is done, of course.
Some of that is habit. As a schoolgirl I always enrolled in the library’s summer reading program. My dad encouraged each of us four siblings to read widely. Not just adventure tales, but also non-fiction books in astronomy, wood-working, photography, gardening, and anything else that caught our fancy.
Summer is also my chance to tackle that TBR (To Be Read) pile of books that threatens to topple over and send me or my husband scrambling to gather up his, mine, and our next-to-read books. Summer is my chance to catch up.
On vacation, I only take about two paperbacks, but I load my Kindle up with more than 50 books. I’m getting fussier about the type of books I’m willing to spend time with. These days. I’ve been known to read the first few pages and abandon it for the next in line. I know I’m not the only one.
I’ve also started reading series books out of sequence. Right! OUT OF SEQUENCE! I’ve discovered if I like the current one, I’m happy to get the rest of the series. If it’s well-written, then I’m in good hands.
How many books do you plan to read this summer?

Hi Cheryl, I love to read in the summer. Also love to read in the fall, winter, and spring! Anyway, I hope to read about 8 books this summer. Keeping my fingers crossed that I do this as its an especially busy summer for me.
Tell me about busy! It’s ridiculous just now, but will calm down in August — then I’ll be around the pool and reading.
I have a huge TBR pile, both on my Kindle and in print, for reading pleasure this summer. As you said, it’s too hot to go outdoors. After our early morning walk, we’re likely to go to a mall or superstore for indoor exercise. Otherwise, I’m either writing or reading during the day and catching up on TV shows in the evening. I still have all the books to read that I’d collected at Malice.
I, too, give up on a book if it doesn’t grab me by the end of the first chapter. There are too many books waiting to be read to spend time with any I’m not enjoying. Had enough of that with assigned reading in school! As for the number of books I plan to read this summer, I don’t have a clue. I just keep reading. 😉
I’m happy to finish a great book. I usually manage two or three a month. Before I got bitten by the writing bug, I used to be able to read two or three a week. LOVE the writing!
Oh my, I haven’t a clue how much I’ll read. I will be traveling and have loaded my kindle with lots of goodies.
Goodness that sounds great. I’m in the middle of turning in a book, moving to a new apartment, and my next book releases in about three weeks. Yay!
I don’t know how many I’ll read. I usually don’t read any more in the summer than I do the other seasons.
Things slow down a bit in St. Petersburg. It’s Africa HOT and we tend to stay out of the sun.
When I was a kid, summer was reading time. All day long LOL. Now, sadly, not so much. Once I finish my current manuscript due the end of this month hopefully I can knock back a couple of books. The stack of TBR keeps growing!
My main reading time is at night, in bed, so the season doesn’t matter. Like others here, I just move from one book to the next.
