Happy Valentine’s Day! This holiday holds special memories for me. Forty-three years ago, my husband proposed on Valentine’s Day. We’d only met in September the year before, so we knew each other for five months before getting engaged. We married in December that year.
We used to do the chocolates and flowers thing, but now we mostly go out to a nice dinner. Here is a collection of the candy boxes I’d kept, now stored as a photo. I don’t pay any attention to the alleged religious origins of this holiday. Instead, I prefer to celebrate it as a festival of love and romance.
But what if you don’t have a sweetheart, or if your significant other is no longer with you? Here are some ways you can bring romance into your life.
Read a romance novel
Light candles around your house or at the dinner table
Play your favorite mood music
Dine out at a fine restaurant with a friend
Pretend you’re a tourist and explore new places
Go away for a weekend retreat
Visit a park or botanical garden
Stay at a bed & breakfast inn
Attend a local fair or festival
Buy yourself a sexy outfit
Soak in a leisurely bubble bath
Pamper yourself at a day spa
Have your hair done, or get a manicure/pedicure
Watch a romantic comedy on television
Indulge in chocolate
Call a friend or a relative you haven’t heard from in a while
Use aromatherapy to enhance your senses
Wear your favorite perfume
Try something you’ve never done before
Take a class in a totally new subject
Prepare yourself a special meal
Romance brings richness, but it’s a richness of the senses no matter how you choose to celebrate. What’s the best Valentine’s Day you can remember?
