Let's Talk with Debra H. Goldstein
August 14 Holidays

I am so bummed. Yesterday was National Left-Handers Day. As a southpaw, I would like to have written about the difficulties writing in long hand poses for writers (smudging the words with our left pinky). Alas, that is not to be. I must talk about what is celebrated on August 14.
If you are in the category of being an over-sixty-two-year-old writer, you can take comfort in that this day commemorates the Social Security Act. For most older writers, this helps supplement their dreams of writing.

If it helps to motivate you to write about lovable animals, perhaps you can take comfort in that today is also World Lizard Day. It speaks for itself.
Speaking of money and how much a typical writer makes, today is also the day we celebrate National Financial Awareness Day. Unfortunately, those in the James Patterson category are few and far between. Consequently, most writers only need to know about limited manners of investing money or, more often, how to explain to the IRS why expenses repeatedly outweigh profits. As I once heard an accountant ask, “Why do you even bother with this?” The answer: “Because I like it.”

I wish I could have written about National Left-Handers Day because the only other personal holiday that today brings is that today is the 42nd anniversary of when I used my left-hand to smash cake into my late husband’s face. Perhaps not something all writers can share, but the intervening years provided me with plenty of fodder for my writing.
Does August 14 have any special memories for you? Do you associate August with back to school memories?

Happy Anniversary back to school shopping always was a fun start to the school year. Buying supplies and new clothes and shoes. So fun. Deborah
I’m so old that when I was a child school started in mid-Sept. It was still hot in southern California, but at least, not as hot as August!
Back when I was also growing up, school didn’t start until September and no one in my family is left-handed.
My grandson is left-handed and he’s just started Kindergarten, so we’ll see how his teacher deals with it. Otherwise, August represents the end of summer for me. All the fun fall activities start in September.
Back in the Northeast, school always started the Thursday after Labor Day. It still does in most areas. Seeing kids go back to school the middle of August always seems so strange to me.
