Celebrating International Sticky Toffee Pudding Day
Whether you prefer to enjoy sticky toffee pudding at a cozy restaurant or make your own from scratch, International Sticky Toffee Pudding Day is the perfect excuse to indulge.
In a world filled with culinary delights, sticky toffee pudding holds a special place as a dessert that brings people together. So, this January 23rd, grab a spoon, and let’s toast to the sweet legacy of sticky toffee pudding!
The Birthplace of Sticky Toffee Pudding
The origins of sticky toffee pudding are shrouded in a mix of fact and legend, but most accounts trace it back to the mid-20th century in the United Kingdom. The Lake District, a picturesque region in England, is often credited as the birthplace of this iconic dessert.
Other accounts suggest that sticky toffee pudding may have earlier roots. Some argue traditional British steamed puddings inspired it, while others point to the influence of North American desserts brought over during wartime exchanges.
Why January 23rd?
The choice of January 23rd as International Sticky Toffee Pudding Day is symbolic for several reasons. First, it’s an ideal time of year for a decadent and warming dessert. As the post-holiday winter chill sets in, many find comfort in indulging in a sweet, nostalgic treat. Food historians and enthusiasts also sought to spotlight sticky toffee pudding as a cultural icon deserving of its own day, much like other foods celebrated worldwide.
While researching local restaurants in St. Petersburg, I determined that one of my characters would own a British gastropub on Central Avenue. Luckily… we have one! At the time, it was called Queen’s Head Pub and served the most delicious sticky toffee pudding I have ever had. Having my protagonist’s love interest buy this delightful restaurant was an absolute no-brainer. It’s changed hands now. The new name is The Salty Nun. However, I still smile every time we pass the place in honor of their delicious dessert.
Have you ever tasted sticky toffee pudding? Do you enjoy cozies that mention delicious food?

What’s Toffee??
Toffee is similar to caramels, Crystal, but it’s brittle instead of soft and doesn’t incorporate cream. If you’ve ever had a Heath bar, they incorporate toffee.
Hi Crystal, It’s a British dessert that I became addicted to while we lived there. Most pubs in the US also feature sticky toffee pudding on their menu. It’s marvelous!
Cheryl, ugh, now you have me dying to try some sticky toffee pudding. I may have to check online to see if anyone ships it. I like seeing food mentioned in cozies though I’m way too lazy to make any of the recipes included. 🙂 Though if someone wants to send me something….
Hi everyone!
I have never had a sticky Toffee Pudding. It looks really good!
I also enjoy recipes in books.
Loved reading your post about the pudding. Very interesting!
Thanks, Sherry. I enjoy adding Southern recipes to my books — it reminds me of cooking with my mom and grandma.
It sounds like it is right up my alley. I’m a big toffee fan!
I love reading about food (especially desserts) in books. Have never even heard of Sticky Toffee pudding, but it sure looks good!
