Let's Talk with Terry Ambrose
It’s the First Day of Spring! Flip Flops or Not?

Can you believe it? It’s the first day of spring! And, at least here in SoCal, spring brings some weighty decisions. Flip-flops or boots? Warm, toasty feet or cool and carefree? It’s a tough call. I tend to gravitate to the warm-and-toasty side, but all around me, the spirit of spring is in the air and it’s flip-flops all the way!
“It Looks Warm, Therefore It Must Be Warm”
Spring has a way of playing with our emotions. Professionals might call the the psychology of denial. Let’s face it. When the sun shines brightly, for a brief, glorious moment, we forget about the icy chill in the air. Surely that brightness equals warmth, right? Wrong.
Living in Southern California, I see this year-round. You’ll spot one person wearing a parka while their neighbor strolls by in flip-flops. It’s like we’ve collectively agreed to pretend the weather doesn’t matter when it comes to our personal style choices.
This sunny optimism is what fuels the determined spring flip-flop wearer. After months of being trapped in clunky boots, nothing says freedom quite like exposing your pasty toes to the world.
The First Flip-Flop Rule of Springtime Club
If you’re going to brave the cold in flip-flops, you need to follow a few unspoken rules to pull it off like a pro.
- Rule #1: Confidence is key. Even if your toes feel like they might fall off, act like you’ve made the most reasonable footwear choice in the universe.
- Rule #2: Socks are controversial but practical. Sure, it’s not the most fashionable look, but if it’s between warmth and frostbitten toes, it’s worth considering.
- Rule #3: Learn to accept the judgment. Yes, everyone around you might be staring. Nod, smile, and walk on with your head held high—your flip-flops have a purpose.
“Shoe or Icicle?” The Great Debate
Deciding to wear flip-flops in 40-degree weather isn’t just a fashion statement. It’s a battle between comfort and style.
On one side, the cold pavement feels like stepping on ice cubes. The wind might feel brutally aggressive as it tunnels between your toes. You might even start questioning if human feet were built for this.
On the other side, there’s an unmatched satisfaction in letting your feet breathe and soak up the sunshine. That first flip-flop-wearing day of the year has a unique magic—it feels like announcing to the world that winter is officially behind you.
Celebrate the Trailblazer That You Are
If you’re one of the few who wear flip-flops before the weather technically allows it, consider yourself a pioneer. You’re blazing the trail for others who’ll soon follow suit—once it warms up just a little more.
To survive the elements without sacrificing style, keep a few survival tips in mind. Carry a pair of fuzzy slippers as your backup plan. Walk faster to generate body heat. Or if all else fails, keep an emergency stash of warm socks in your bag.

When All Else Fails, Compromise
For those who want to bridge the gap between warmth and style, there’s always the sock-and-sandal combo. Yes, I said it. The once-controversial practice of pairing socks with flip-flops is finding its place in modern streetwear.
Not long ago, I entered this territory myself. After developing Achilles tendonitis, I found that Birkenstocks paired with socks offered both the support and warmth I needed. Sure, my wife raised an eyebrow the first time I debuted this look, but eventually, even she had to admit it made practical sense.
When done right, socks and flip-flops can be a bold fashion statement—one that future generations may thank you for normalizing. When done wrong—well, enough said.
Why We’re All Secretly Jealous of You
Finally, we need to acknowledge the real benefit of being an early flip-flop adopter. You’re not just someone wearing open-toe shoes in 40-degree weather; you’re a symbol of hope. You’re the harbinger of warmer days.
People might laugh now, but give it a few weeks, and everyone will be slipping into their flops and pretending they were on board all along.
The Beachtown Connection
Carlsbad, the sun-soaked beach town and home to the Beachtown Detective Agency Mystery series, is a paradise for flip-flop lovers and laid-back vibes. But in The Case of the Amorous Assailant, Jade spots a man at her favorite sandwich shop who’s the perfect picture of the surfer lifestyle. As a surfer herself, Jade knows the appeal, but as a sharp PI, she trades flip-flops for sturdy running shoes—because when you’re chasing suspects, style won’t save you.
What about you? When do you break out the flip-flops? Are you the adventurous type, slipping them on the moment the first warm day arrives? Do you wait until summer’s in full swing to free those toes? Or do you stick with tradition and keep them covered a little longer? Hi Terry, This is an easy choice for me—I don’t own a pair of flip-flops at all! I’m a barefoot-on-the-beach girl. We were out on St. Petersburg Beach last weekend, and the sugar-soft sand was a little cool but heavenly!
I do love the feel of sand between my toes, too!
Regular flip flops I just can’t wear hurts to much so wear open toed shoes or go barefoot
I’ve had to give up my regular flip flops, too, Crystal. I can wear Birkenstocks, but there’s not enough support in the old classic flip flop.
I only wear flip-flops to the pool. I’ve never found them comfortable. I’d never wear them except going barefoot is even more uncomfortable for me. Californians do seem to love their flip-flops, though. We attended a formal wedding in San Diego years ago where the wedding party all wore flip-flops down the aisle with their formal gowns and tuxes–even the bride and groom!
That’s California for you, Lois! I think a lot of us have that I-want-to-be-in-the-tropics mentality!
I already started wearing my flip-flops because we had a day in the 70’s 😀 However, I go back to wearing actual shoes when it’s colder… definitely depends on the weather for me!
That’s the smart way to handle it, Maria!
I will start wearing flip flops when the temperature is in the 70’s . When it’s here to stay. 🥰
Thanks for being here, Sherry! I agree with you. Too cold is, well,, too cold!
I wear sandals year-round. They’re more comfortable for my feet than closed-toe shoes. I cannot wear flip-flops, though. Not enough support. I need straps across the front and around my ankle.
Lately, I’ve been falling out of my Birkenstocks. I’m going to have to make a change.
Well, not exactly Flip-Flops, but sandals that stay on my feet with back strap would be my choice.
That’s pretty close. 🙂
I like the slide-on version of flip-flops. And I occasionally wear them with socks. Apparently I’m not a fashionista!
Here in northern ca we usually have a crazy springtime. It goes from temps in the 50’s one week to temps in the 80’s the next and then back again!
So by the first day of spring I have my flip flops and sandals out and ready to go. This was I can switch back and forth between them and shoes.
You must be inland, Helen. When we lived in Alameda, it hardly ever got much above the 70s, and even then, it never lasted long. Mark Twain was right!
Yes, I am in Redding which is the top end of the Sacramento valley. Alameda has much milder temps than we do! lol
