Our Authors Reveal Their Reading Preferences

Authors on the Bench

What are your favorite genres to read other than the ones you write?
  • Terry Ambrose:

I really like historical mysteries or historical fiction. Something about going back in time intrigues me.

  • Nancy J. Cohen:

Aside from cozies, I enjoy reading historical mysteries, historical romance, sci-fi and fantasy, and some YA. I’m clearly a genre fiction fan.

  • Debra H. Goldstein:

The twisted marvelous lives of people intrigue me.

  • Cheryl Hollon:

I adore contemporary biographies, science fiction, poetry, and Shakespeare.

  • Maggie Toussaint:

I laughed at this question. With my writing in sci-fi/fantasy, cozy mystery, paranormal cozies, romantic suspense, and sweet romance, it would be hard to find another fictional genre to read. (Horror is a road too far for me.) But I read extensively in all the genres that I write in. I call it peer research and market study, and I absolutely love-love-love to read. After all, I was an avid reader before I became a writer.

  • Lois Winston:

I enjoy historical fiction, especially when it incorporates real-life people of the period. I’m partial to books by Shelley Nobel, Kate Quinn, and Fiona Davis. I also love the absurdist humor in books by Jonas Jonasson.

It appears our reading tastes are very diverse. From historical fiction to sci-fi to biographies, we seem to have most of the genres covered! Now it’s your turn—what are your favorite genres to read? Share your go-to reads in the comments below!

  1. I have a hard time answering this question, both because I skip around genres and because my preferences are based more on characters/plot development than the genre description. I *can* say for sure that my preference is fiction over non-fiction and, in the fiction realm, I steer clear of horror, gritty and graphic stories…. other than that, I’m pretty open to trying something new!

  2. I love to read and have read books in all different genres. When I was younger I read a lot of horror and thrillers. Now I read (mostly) cozy mysteries. But, I also like historical mysteries and historical fiction.

  3. I am a huge fan of mystery and suspense, psychological, crime and horror thrillers! I also enjoy historical (mystery) fiction, and sci-fi!
