Listening to Audiobooks

October 2, 2025

Recently, I attended the Novelists, Inc. conference in St. Pete Beach. This is an event where multi-published authors discuss marketing and other hot topics. A couple of sessions were on audiobooks, a booming market. Since the first four books in my Bad Hair Day series are available in audio format, I needed to learn how to promote these titles.

I’d created them through a non-exclusive agreement at ACX, an audio production site for indie authors that is owned by Amazon. I hadn’t paid much attention to these works, especially after Findaway Voices split into Spotify and InAudio. These are distribution channels, and I didn’t realize until now when I took a look at them that I needed to update my chapter headings and metadata. Apparently, it didn’t transfer well in the transition. At the same time, I could upload my newest audiobook title.

After many years, I’ve finally published my award-winning instructional guide, Writing the Cozy Mystery, in an audiobook edition. I’m very pleased with how it turned out but now must decide on the best way to promote this title.

I’ve been listening to a fantasy novel I’d downloaded to my Audible app and am enjoying the experience. When my eyes get tired, I’ll lie on the couch and listen to the book on my iPhone. The playback starts where you left off each time, which is convenient. It’s very soothing hearing someone read you a story. But a good audiobook is more than reading. It is more akin to a performance, where the narrator voices the different characters. I get immersed and visualize the setting, which is why I can’t listen to an audiobook when driving.

Chirp is a great source of finding audiobooks from new authors or trying one or two titles to see if you like listening. Owned by BookBub, Chirp offers free and bargain priced audiobooks, and you can also subscribe to their emails. Go on over and see what they have to offer.

Have you ever listened to an audiobook?

  1. I haven’t listened to an audiobook in a long time. I used to listen to them while traveling. I don’t spend a lot of time in the car lately. I really should try to remember to listen to them when I’m working around the house.

  2. ooooh, I will definitely check out Chirp. I don’t listen to audio books (yet), but I like the idea of them, and being to find discounted prices is appealing! Thank you SO much for the tip!
