Nah Dogs, Ice Cream, and Fried Chicken
By Cheryl Hollon

When life goes sideways, I seek comfort food.

Eating well has become a habit in my family. Perhaps an obsession. We have been eating an organic, locally sourced, low sodium diet for a couple of years. The changes were VERY slow, but we feel fantastic. Again, gradually, we find ourselves preparing more and more plant-based foods.

My husband, a retired chemical engineer, is an expert at the complicated recipes that please the vegan diet of my youngest son and his wife. He says it reminds him of performing analysis tasks in his research lab. He has perfected a vegan meatloaf that defies detection.

Surprisingly, more often than I would have predicted, I choose the vegan specialty when we eat in our local restaurants. Our very favorite is from a food cart. They are called NAH DOGS and are absolutely delicious. We’re supporting them wherever they appear in our city.

But when the anxiety of current events hits me right in the creative muse, I need comfort food to put me back at the keyboard. My first choice is Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey Ice Cream. Served up with a spoon right out of the carton. My next treat is Oreo cookies and a glass of cold milk. Takes me right back to childhood.

For fast food, I crave Lee’s Fried Chicken. There aren’t many of these chain stores around, but I love this because my mom also loves this brand. There is one by her house and every time I visit, I know we’re going to have a chicken dinner from Lee’s.

What’s your favorite comfort food?
